Frequently asked questions
Can a stick vacuum replace my regular vacuum?
In a home up to about 1,300 sq ft with mostly hard floors, yes. With a lot of shag carpet, a canister vacuum still cleans more thoroughly.
How long does the battery last?
Expect three to five years. Ideally, choose a model whose battery you can replace yourself.
Is a more expensive model always better?
No. Above $400 we mostly saw extra accessories and a display, not necessarily better cleaning results.
Do manufacturers have influence on this guide?
No. Manufacturers cannot pay for a spot and only see our conclusions after publication.
Which is better, a stick vacuum or a canister vacuum?
A canister vacuum still cleans high-pile carpet more thoroughly and has no battery that wears out. A stick vacuum is quicker to grab, easier on the stairs and takes up less space. For most homes with hard floors, a good stick vacuum is enough.
How many watts should a good stick vacuum have?
Wattage says little about how well it cleans. In our test, a model with fewer air watts picked up more dirt than a stronger model because its brush worked better. Look at test results per floor type.
Can I vacuum the stairs with a stick vacuum?
Yes, and that's exactly where they shine. Remove the wand and use the unit as a handheld with the small turbo brush. A model under 2.5 kilos is the most comfortable.
Is a stick vacuum good for pet hair?
Yes, if it has a brush that doesn't let hair wrap around it. The Northwind X2 did this best in our test. With other models you need to cut the brush clean regularly.
How often should I clean the filter?
Rinse a washable filter once a month and let it dry for a day. Replace it once a year. If you have pets, clean it every two weeks.
How much electricity does a stick vacuum use?
A full charge uses 0.05 to 0.1 kWh. If you charge it every day, that costs roughly $5 to $10 a year.
Can a stick vacuum stay on the charger all the time?
Yes. Modern batteries stop charging when they're full. A battery does last longer if you store it at room temperature.
When is a stick vacuum cheapest?
Prices usually drop around Black Friday in November and in January. In our price history, the Vorta S9 dropped by up to 15 percent during those periods last year.
